Murphy, nicknamed Murph, was one of three engines, the others were Neil and Jared, that operated on the Sodor and Mainland Railway from 1856 until the line went bankrupt, in 1914. Sir Topham Hatt decided to keep Murph, Neil and Jared to run the Kirk Ronan Branch Line.
